Coach. The term isn’t legally protected or binding and even Wikipedia doesn’t explain it very well. Yet everyone seems to be one, these days. Horse whisperers, dieticians, national team strategists... to be is to coach! And then, just to confuse matters, there are trainers and advisors. So here’s my definition of a coach, in relation to the other terms I just mentioned: a trainer has tools and methods he wants to teach you. An advisor gives you tips based on his perspective. A coach helps you find the answers yourself by asking the right questions.
To be clear: in the majority of sessions I’ll take recourse to all three of these fields. So, dear partners in HR, I appeal to your tolerance when it comes to wording. It could well be that a term like “training” might crop up when talking about coaching, or vice versa. Relax and judge me on results rather than terms used. You’ll find it’s worth it. Individual coaching sessions are a luxury, very intensive and, hence, extremely rewarding.

JOB ON THE JOB
The optimal gateway to business coaching. Your coach accompanies you during one day on the job: in the office, during a business lunch, a talk show, a meeting, an evening gala or a press conference. He listens while you’re on the phone, holding a job interview, talking to colleagues, giving an interview or heading a meeting. He’s experiencing you up close. You talk, he listens and, after half a day or a day, he gives an appraisal. You discover how you come across on the non-verbal level, which verbal mannerisms you’ve adopted, which behaviour patterns might tarnish people’s perception of your competence and confidence, what the obstacles might be and how you can alter these things. This is a highly effective and compact approach that also allows you to examine how your self-perception corresponds with that of others and what you can improve on to become the person you actually are.
This direct feedback approach is particularly useful for top managers and celebrities, in other words for people whose status puts them in a position where they can no longer be certain who is honest with them and who is holding back out of respect or fear. People learn best through feedback and discussion. If this is lacking people become isolated and their reliance on confirmatory professional achievements limits their ability to grow as humans.
TELEPHONE COACHING
Basically, every coaching and even some training sessions can be conducted via the telephone – no matter whether life coaching, interview preparation or communication training. Usually, the coach will make notes and later send a photo-protocol. Of course, the session can also be conducted via skype. However, most clients prefer just voice because it facilitates concentration and some like to close their eyes because it helps them focus on the fundamental points.
COUNSELLING
Many managers would ideally like to have a “referee” at their side during their working day, somebody neutral who can give professional feedback on the persons’ perceptions. A business coach with a counselling background is someone he can trust. The coach is both neutral and supportive, can identify specific behaviour patterns, underlying beliefs or mannerisms.
This is extremely useful as we can only change things we are aware of. And simply being able to talk freely about what bothers them and being offered some fresh perspectives on old and worn-down patterns and strategies is often experienced as a real relief. This has led many clients to permanently change their approach.
MIRROR SESSION
We all have behaviour patterns and mannerisms we’re not aware of that can obstruct us because other people do in fact notice them. A mirror session is your chance to get this one-on-one feedback from a coach who values you as a person and respects your interests – with honesty and clarity. Shine a light on your “blind spots” – a fascinating and revealing experience for clients.
What may appear as a magical glimpse into the “crystal ball” is an opportunity enabled by years of experience in unravelling emotional subtleties and subtexts and a professional perceptiveness attuned to hearing not only what is said but what is not said. A great way to take an in-depth look at how we are seen by others.
LIFE COACHING
Whether you want to reach or determine a goal, identify limiting behavioural or thought patterns, whether you are confronted with stressful situations, conflicts or misunderstandings, are searching for meaning or simply wish to be a better version of yourself, able to live your life to its full potential - these are all great reasons to choose life coaching. Or, to put it another way: if there’s a topic that’s too big to confront your best friend with and too small to justify going to a therapist, it’s time to engage with a professional coach.
PHOBIA DELETION
To be clear, most people suffering from a phobia would rather keep their fear than confront it. For those few who really wish to rid themselves of their fear of flying, hights, birds or underground trains I recommend a session based on the Energy Diagnostic and Treatment Method by Fred Gallo.”
As a rule of thumb, the greater your anxiety the “better” it is for me: as a practitioner it’s easier to deal with strong, clear emotions than with feelings that are ambiguous.
And to reassure you: no, we will not be delving into the origins of your phobia and we won’t dissect your childhood. We’re just going to delete the emotional memory of the fear using a simple and effective technique Karin Kuschik has been successfully applying for over ten years. Two sessions have so far always proved sufficient to achieve this.
STAGE COACHING
It is truly astounding how most top managers go about conducting presentations or holding speeches. Starting off haphazardly, ending ineffectually. Nothing riveting, no surprises. It’s as if the speaker – once out there – has completely forgotten how mind-numbingly boring endless slideshows are and that he too would be nodding off if he were listening to himself drone on. Yet it could all be so easy! Being supremely confident, impressing your audience and taking interjections in your stride is not a question of talent. You can learn to be articulate and you can definitely learn the art of storytelling.
This very intensive one-on-one training is best conducted in the real-life setting of a boardroom or on a stage. Learn all the relevant steps for a successful live performance from a consummate professional – from optimal preparation to a relaxed stance in reacting to vivacious applause (like you have probably seldom heard, so far).
My clear and to-the-point recommendation: invest time - lots of it - and money. Splash out. Because you will then be able to lean back, for the rest of your life, and enjoy the heartfelt praise you’ll be receiving. You’ll also be permanently saving what you have comparatively briefly invested: time and money.
CHARISMA COACHING
You can’t learn charisma, right? Wrong. Fact is, people make spontaneous judgements about others, stating - rather ambiguously – “the chemistry wasn’t right” (or was right, as the case may be). We only need a few seconds to form a first impression: if during that instant something bothers us because someone is doing too much, or too little of something, or is confusing us in some other way, we may not give them a second chance. But charisma can be learned!
It’s not a fixed entity or something we’re born with, but rather the sum total of many small but significant elements. And these things can be optimized. The same is true for our basic outlook or attitude. Supreme confidence derives from a knowledge of who we really are and this lets us “shine”, in many ways. A diamond, after all, shines brightest the more prisms and edges it has.
